The historic racing season is really in full swing now as the Gold Cup, Goodwood Revival and Spa 6 Hours follow in quick succession. Two days at pretty Oulton were dominated by rain and cold winds. It certainly helped to separate the men from the boys when the elements conspired to create a phenomenally greasy surface, with spins and slides commonplace as big power and serious ambition met skinny treaded tyres and gripless macadam.
I love the Gold Cup – it has a charm all of its own. You can’t argue with 2.0L Group 6 sports prototypes of the 1970s, F5000 of the same period and a big field of lightweight E-Types. As a breathless season continues it’s off to Donington Park for the Masters and Brands Hatch for the DTM next. It’s not a bad life, that of the motor racing geek…
